Shield TV + Plex Server + External HDD

by toronto_programmer

Hey guys,

I am thinking about moving my Plex Media Server to a new Shield TV with a 4TB My Book as the HDD.

I have read previously that you cannot store the metadata for PMS files on the external, that they have to be located locally on the device. Is this true?

If so, would the metadata for a 4TB drive (hundreds of movies primarily, a few TV shows) be too much for the 16GB internal drive on the device?

Thanks!

Not too sure about moving the Metadata over to external, but I have the same exact setup. I've never really had a problem with using too much internal storage, but it's also really easy to mount an old flash drive as internal storage if you run out. I found a 16GB one laying around the house so I just added it to the internal storage and moved all my apps over there to make sure plex has plenty of room to breathe. Good luck!

Currently running a 4tb raid with roughly 400 movies and 80 series with multiple seasons. Raid is about half filled, and the meta data for plex is around 3 gigs. If your collection is bigger than that you may need more space than the 16 especially if you are installing other large apps.
