Can the Nvidia Shield be repaired?

by SteveAM1

I was watching Netflix tonight and heard a loud buzz and the screen froze. The power light was one, but everything was frozen. I unplugged power and now I get nothing. No power light.

Can I send it in for repair or is it pretty much disposable?

If I had to guess, a capacitor blew up. An important one by the sounds of it.

If you have another shield it would be wise to ensure the wall brick is working and shield itself is broke. I'm assuming the cap (if it's that) is inside the shield. Usually they are obvious when they go but they look like they're all SMT style.

As for repair, only Nvidia will succeed unless it's an obvious fault like exploded cap or blown passive component. To actually fault find a visually hidden problem (like bad chip, blown trace, etc) you will need schematics.

I had one that just stopped working too. Sent it to the store for repairs (which they don't seem to do), and they were out of the 2015 model, so I'm getting the 2017 model as replacement. It was more than a year old, but get it replaced because in norway we have a warranty by law for 5 years.

No more warranty? :(
I doubt there is much to repair and if you can't check yourself, there is probably no shop familiar with it.
I would try to plug it in and hold the power button on the device for a long time! I don't remember the number, but the reset on shield was something ridiculous :-p Before you throw it out, open it and see if something is obviously fried inside.

16GB or 500GB model? If it's the 500, maybe the buzz was the HDD calling it quits. In that case, you could replace it.

Also, a skilled electronics repair shop could probably diagnose the issue, although it would probably cost you to do so.

If the warrenty is intact (and check your credit card you bought it with, as it may have a better warrenty for shit you buy!), Call the place you bought it/Nvidia.

If the warrenty is already toast, crack the case open, and look for anything that looks like black shit, and check the caps. They should have a flat(ish) top. If the top looks BULGED, or has little point looking things sticking up/or if the cap is raised off the board, that is your first point to look at.
