Video cataloguing app for Android TV?

by oroboros74

I am looking for an app that let's me view my local video collection in a usable way.

I've been using MXPlayer, which is not bad, but I would like the thumbnails to be larger.

I did try Archos Video Player, which has a great interface and scrapes, allowing you to associate fanart and descriptions and stuff, but what I didn't like was 1) it was scanning my entire hard drive, and I only wanted to select certain folders (it's possible to remove video from library, but I don't want to do this one by one), and to a lesser extent 2) it wasn't easy to correct the fanart/titles (a video I had named "wedding" was linked to a movie by the same name). But at the same time as cataloguing my local movies, I also want to be able to have a nice overview of my home-/cellphone-videos.

Ideally what I'd like:

  • Folder support: show/hide, look in folders, etc
  • Easy scraping (automatic and manual)
  • Viewing progress
  • Sorting options (genres, name, etc)
  • Parental lock (via PIN or something)
  • Nice interface with decent size thumbnails which make good use of the real estate: I don't want to see only 5 movies at a time and have to scroll forever. maybe also seeing a preview like some video apps/sites have, as if they were animated GIFs, especially useful for personal content (cell videos) which maybe doesn't have a meaningful name
  • Import/Export settings, or somehow to back them up

Any suggestions?

Plex. Kodi is also good but a bit daunting for some

Plex is the answer you're looking for.

What device?

Kodi is a good start.

You can do Plex if you have a machine that can always be running for the server end or if you have a shield you can run server and client in the shield alone.

That's a new phrase... "video cataloging"

What you're looking for is "media center software". That will turn up better search results than video cataloging.

Not sure if this ticks all your boxes but Plex is what I use. It's been around for a decade now and comes pre-installed on smart TVs, so it's pretty popular. They have a client for almost every device you can hook up to a television.

The best competitor to it is Kodi , which might be more up your alley. (no server needed, multiple themes/skins to choose from) Kodi originally started out as XBMC about 15 years ago. If you've got a Shield TV, then go with the SPMC version of it.
