Using VPN to bypass SlingTV check on mibox

by munchee

I have a mibox, a VPN subscription from PIA. Yet, getting sling TV to work outside of the US is surprisingly difficult. I've tried the official VPN app, and the openVPN app to connect to VPN. However I keep getting the warning that I am not in the correct region to use sling TV.

The VPN works fine on my Mac. Not sure what's the difference in android VPN... Anyone knows a fix for this?

PIA replied. Turns out its the DNS that leaks my geo info. Had to change DNS. It works now.

Did you sideload it, or is it on the app store? I read sideloading it is a pain unless you use a remote with a mouse. Maybe it's not on, or needs to be changed in options.

Either way, I have no clue, but you can try this work around (it's for FireTV, but should work with any device).

Long story short, share you internet from Mac, connect your phone to it, start a hotspot, connect your mi box to phone's hotspot. Maybe you can bypass the phone hotspot and just share straight from your computer?

What it says is this:

"I recently worked out a way to get my fire tv stick to go through my vpn on my computer.

To do this I set up my Mac running Yosemite up as follows:

1)Wifi Turned off (wifi is still broadcasting from your router). This is for a later step.

  1. connect the Mac to the Internet via Ethernet. Confirm the connection is happening through Ethernet by loading a website.

  2. go to System Preferences on the Mac and click Network.

  3. add a service at the bottom and follow the directions HERE ( https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/osx10.10-pptp ) to setup PIA as a VPN service using the native Mac software. Note: this requires generating a special username and password which can be done in your PIA account page. Connect to the VPN and test the connection works.

  4. with that set up and running go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet Sharing (don't check it)

  5. in the drop down box select the VPN you just set up and check WiFi. In the wifi settings you configure the network name, user name and password to broadcast your internet over wifi. Click ok.

  6. check the box to turn on Internet sharing. It should ask you to turn on wifi. Click ok. And Start the broadcast when prompted. Watch the wifi status indicator in the menu bar until is turns to a solid gray indicating it is broadcasting your connection via wifi.

  7. on your cell phone attempt to connect to your new wifi network by tapping its name and entering in the password you created in step 6.

It may take a moment to connect fully but when it does make sure you can freely browse the Internet on your cell phone.

  1. If so go back to system preferences-> network->Your VPN from step 4 and the indicator should be lighting up green showing your browsing data from your phone is being routed through your VPN.

Note: Make sure there isn't other network activity on the VPN to make sure you're test is accurate as data can also be coming from any application or service that is using your internet connection.

  1. on your fire tv stick connect to your new virtual wifi network like you did on your phone

Once connected test by playing content and check the meter as in 9.Your fire tv is now accessing the Internet through your Mac's wifi which is routing all data through your VPN. We are essentially using our Mac as an aftermarket router. "

Be careful, they cancelled my service when they saw I was using a VPN.

I know this does not solve your problem. But I use Sling on a VPN on my Shield. I use the VyprVPN Android TV app and Sling works like a charm. So this will help confirm that it does indeed work behind a VPN.
