I have it on my mi box and got it from the play store just set up a friends mi box yesterday and got it from the play store as well no need to sideload
Yes, you can sideload it very easily. It works great, I use it all the time.

Yup. You will need at minimum to install a file manager that offers apk install from play store, and ideally a PC based apk resigner. I recommend x-plore file manager over es due to es turning into a malware.
If you love es get an old version without the malware-style cleaner and popups, and resign the apk so it won't update automatically. You will probably need to resign SPMC 15 to prevent 16.5.5 auto update, unless you disable auto updates completely. Android TV play store don't offer individual app update disable

Ok, but you can't just say I prefer 15, an almost 2 year old build, on a brand new device without telling us why. inquiring mind want to know. :)
