It may be an issue with the ads. I have Youtube Red and I haven't seen any issues with the app lately.
Same here.. Shield pro 2017.. I have youtube red too..
Actually... Do you have any drives / nas plugged into the shield that have power saving? I have a WD network nas that has power saving and when I start YouTube the drive spins up, taking 3 or 4 seconds before YouTube starts. I only say this cause that nas is plugged into my router beside the TV and I see the delay and the drive spins up. both nas and Shield are hard wored. This might help explain.
I just ran into this yesterday. A couple times it actually crashed before I cleared the cache and restarted.
Even after that, I still see the pause that you mentioned - at least it doesn't crash anymore though.
