Sounds like you want a Raspberry Pi.
My 87 year old grandmother likes to watch russian TV. I bought a Mi Box and installed an app on it which subscribes to russian iptv. She has trouble using it, and i have trouble teaching her. So I thought if i could remote control into it I could help her when she gets stock. So your saying raspberry Pi would be easier to set this up with?
For B), would it be possible to just side-load an app like teamviewer?
You could try sideloading Autostart - No root. It lets you select an app you want to run when the device boots. As for remote controling it I don't really know... but you could try sideloading something like Teamviewer like others commented.
