It's as simple as the headline describes. Any attempt to play a video file that's encoded as MPEG/xvid video and MPEG/MP3 audio is met with a never-ending loading screen and loading circle. The files simply won't play on my Mi Box or my Nvidia Shield.
Anyone else experiencing this?

It works fine for me, all my xvid+mp3 in avi are working in plex client on my mibox with no issues. maybe you have enabled Forced direct play on the settings. AVI need to be transcoded (not sure why..) or you can remux them to mp4 (if you put it in an mkv it still transcode :S) without reencoding them to avoid transcoding on the fly by the plex server, i have done it for few series already.

Nope, and the majority of my library is xvid/mp3...Shitty brah
