Help! I want to use MiBox, but does it have Amazon Prime Video content?

by derpmcturd

So I'm desperately looking for a way to leave my FireTV box because it keeps not waking up from sleep, forcing me to get up and physically unplug the FireTV and then replug it in just to wake up the unit. I've had enough, and I need an alternative. I just recently heard about MiBox and it all sounds fantastic, but is it true that there's no Amazon Prime Video app? So I wouldn't be able to watch Amazon Prime shows on it? I really don't have the funds to spend on an AppleTV or a Shield box, and I don't want a Roku because the PlaystationVue app which I use everyday is comically unusable on the Roku platform. Please help, I'm fighting hard everyday to NOT throw my FireTV through my living room window onto the street.

Try to find a used shield TV on Craigslist, eBay or Amazon. It is far and a way the best streamer out there, and you will get Amazon video without the hassle of side loading it on the mi box and it potentially not working after a while.

I personally just bought a Fire TV Stick because the mi box wasn't quite up to my expectations. Randomly needs to be restarted to work properly, chromecast-ing is super broken for me, and no Amazon video (I believe there are workarounds but they only give you 480p? I could be wrong on that).

I haven't installed Kodi on my fire stick yet, but everything what is much more responsive for me than the mi box at right half the cost (you can get a free one by paying for your first month of DirecTV Now for $35).

I like the idea of the mi box but ultimately it was a let down for me.

Amazon released Prime on Shield, so I suspect it will come to Android box in general at some point. Right now you can only sideload the Android version. I can't speak much of that, as I prefer Netflix.

The Mi Box works perfectly. I was disappointed by Fire, and Roku, and finally found the Mi. I don't often use Prime and waiting for it to expire, however if I really want to I either use Roku or use Kodi on the Mi Box (generally the latter).

Shield isn't worth it unless you like to play mobile games. If prime is that important, than FireTV is your only cheapish option right now.

I'm not sure if Chromecast works with Amazon Prime, but if it does, than you can cast on the Mi Box. Only did it with a video I own once, but worked well.

You can sideload Prime Video onto your MiBox. I used some kind of Amazon Prime Video launcher app that sideload/installs the Prime Video app... (e.g. used an app to install an app... ) It was weird, but it works. I watch it now and then and it has a few quirks since the navigation is not meant for a simple remote, but I watched almost all of Man in the High Castle on my Mi box without much issue.

I just used the information from this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/56jm3o/psa_amazon_video_works_on_the_mi_box/?st=izxgxlhn&sh=8ef32985

You should be able to just download it on a usb stick and load it that way.. use a file manager to open the usb drive and run the install..

You can sideload a lot of apps by just getting the apk... some work, some dont... some work better with a mouse and keyboard, some require you to force landscape mode, etc...

Good luck!

I wanted to know why amazon doesn't want to sell chromecast and Google home, and also why it's selling mi box which supports chromecast? Is it a sign of Amazon instant video coming on MI box??

There are no Amazon apps for Android TV, so your choices are limited to Roku, Fire, or Apple TV. ( Edit: apparently Shields have Prime Video preloaded.)

You can side load the Android app onto Android TV but there are annoying limitations - I believe you need to use a mouse? You can cast to the MiBox from the Amazon Video app on your phone, If I'm not mistaken. ( Edit: apparently this isn't a thing. I know nothing.)

The MiBox is far from perfect but we use it every day and it gets the job done. I actually just switched to Sling yesterday because PS Vue is slow as hell. PS Vue runs like crap on 95% of devices though. Got tired of it.
