Shield TV audio stopped working

by kgeissler

Don't know what is going on. My 2015 Shield TV was playing sound fine...from live channels to HD Homerun TV to Youtube. As I was watching TV today, the sound stopped. Once in a while it will come back on, but if I go to do something else, it cuts back off. I have the HDMI running from the Shield to my Onyko receiver, to my TV.

What happened? It was working fine up until about 5 minutes ago. Tried restarting the shield, unplugging the HDMI cable...nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

had this happen with my Pioneer receiver twice. after lengthy googling (which i assume you did as well..!), i found the issue to be HDMI handshake related. The fix was to turn off everything, unplug from power, and let it sit for a while. I waited 30+ mins just to be sure, but could prob be less. This drains the power from the devices, and any issues/bugs that might be open, will be stopped (very crude terms, I know.). Then plug everything back in, starting with your Receiver, and turn on as you normally would. this fixed it for me.

If you still have issues, try looking up "HDMI handshake issues" + your receiver model, and you might find some other fixes.

edit: by turning off and unplugging everything, I mean anything connected via HDMI to your receiver, including TV, Shield, etc.

After unplugging the power from everything and then turning it all back on, if that doesn't work. Run the HDMI cable from the shield directly to your TV and turn on your TV's built in speakers to see if you get sound. If you do not try a different HDMI cable. Basically work on ruling out components. It might not be the shield causing the problem but the receiver or the cable. Does the receiver work with other devices? In the same Port? You get the idea.

What model the onkyo receiver is? Does it output any sounds from other devices besides the shield? There is active recall for some onkyo 2010-2012 models that have issues with the hdmi board. I have personally used that free recall repair service two times, first was for my onkyo tx-nr579 and second time it was for my 50$ (has had loss of audio, but works now) tx-nr616

Both times I would have video pass through but audio and network would be disabled.
