Is anyone happy with their AirTV?

by JoeB-

I am looking for a simple solution that seamlessly integrates OTA with live streaming (traditional cable-only) channels, and that can be used with a single universal remote (to operate primarily power and volume on the TV). DVR and gaming functionalities are not required.

The AirTV seems to meet these requirements out-of-the-box, notwithstanding the Fisher-Price design. Unfortunately, I've read a lot of complaints about the AirTV. For one, integration of OTA and Sling guides apparently is awaiting an update. Others include poor performance (freezing and other glitches) and poor customer service with respect to refunds and RMAs.

So, if you've got one, are you happy with it? Has the update to integrate the guides been released?

Any other suggestions or advice? Is Live Channels an option? Do any of the other live TV streaming services (i.e. Vue) integrate with Live Channels? This would open up other options like the Shield.

Note: I am assuming that AirTV is running Android TV, but I could be wrong about that...

The AirTV is running Android TV. I looked into them a while back for a similar single-remote solution, especially for a guest room purpose. The few reports and reviews I could find (take a look at Youtube comments for video reviews) indicated a lot of issues with freezing and reboots. Seems like the remote is also troublesome for the TV side. I haven't seen anything recently but I'm on the lookout as well.

I'm currently using a couple of Shield TVs so this box would be strictly guestroom usage. With the Shields I use a Fire Stick remote and a Sideclick adapter for my single remote setup.

I really do wish a company would release a good box with a decent remote and programmable built-in IR blaster to control my TV or sound system power and volume. Until then, Sideclicks will just have to do.

I didn't know the AirTV was officially in consumers hands yet, I'll have to lok in to it.

Vue, Sling, DirecTV Now do not integrate with live channels. Sling vaugley hinted at live channels support but I'll believe it when I see it. On my Shield TV the performance of the box has been stellar. Live Channels worked excellent, until the last update which brought DVR for OTA, now I get hiccups every 5-10 seconds using the network tuner option for a source. I am using the HDHomerun extend with that BTW. My only disappointment with my shield TV so far has been no DirecTV now app :( hacked versions of the FireTV app work somewhat, but for how long who knows.

This device is an official AndroidTV device

I actually owned an Airtv and tuner and returned it because it had a picture problem on all my tvs. The image had a greenish tint on all output, regardless of source, and weekly requests to their tech team elicited nary a response.

A big drag was initial setup that demands you take the 7 day trial of Sling and required a credit card. Not bad if you are a Sling devotee but I am only interested in the baseline androidtv features.

The promised Sling integration with live channels is yet to be realized but I expect it will be pushed out shortly.

The optional ATSC tuner works as advertised but still relies on a standalone app. Using my roof antenna I got all the channels as my other tuners and tvs.

The device is built by Technicolor (yes, those people) around a Marvell chipset. Seems relative responsive in most respects.

This device would be well suited for anyone considering OTA channels and the Sling OTT app.

The person to be tweeting is @RogerLynch from Sling. He is the one that had told about 20 bloggers writing launch articles that the OTA integration shown at CES would come in February. This was a SlingTV presentation jointly with AirTV.

Please tweet this person and ask him "Where's the AirTV Sling OTA integration at?"

This guy is active on Sling, but is avoiding questions on this matter. He needs flooded.

Background: We had a Logitech GoogleTV several years ago. And have had an AirTV since late January.

The Good: we were able to ditch our expensive AT&T U-verse service and except for DVR capability, replicate access to the shows we regularly watch.

The Bad: Still missing the update to integrate OTA channels in the guide (the antenna dongle/guide integration was main reason for trying AirTV). Without you have to scroll all the way to the right, and launch a separate guide, which for us, never had the schedule until we had watched a channel. It's far more cumbersome than just switching TV inputs to watch OTA TV.

Also, the box seems woefully underpowered. Apps would often crash, streaming would freeze, etc. System/App updates might alleviate some of that, but it just seems like there's not enough horsepower either: e.g. just about every app or streaming service starts with low quality video for several seconds til you get HD resolution. I can't imagine how long it would take if you watching 4K.

There's also NO USER SUPPORT FORUM for this thing. If you want support, you have to call an 800 number.

The interface and especially the remote are clearly designed to make it easy for cordcutters, but if you're the least bit technology challenged, AirTV is going to be frustrating to use until it gets some major improvements.

The promised update hasn't arrived yet. SlingTV cloud DVR is going to ever device except AirTV first. No user support forum. It just seems device isn't getting the attention it needs.

As an alternative, we're trying out an nvidia shield (which just arrived this afternoon). We've noticed a HUGE improvement in system performance, network throughput, and streaming quality. Time will tell if we still have wonky apps and streaming that spontaneously craps out.

I think we're going to relegate our AirTV to the bedroom.

IMO it's great for a bedroom situation. Single remote for AirTV and TV power/volume is nice. Except for the supposed upcoming OTA integration, I'm happy w/it. OTA using their tuner works well but is cumbersome to get to until they do the integration w/Sling guide.
