Best USB for Adaptable Storage

by garethobrien

I am going to buy a USB Key to expand the storage on my 2017 Shield TV.

Reading some posts on nVidia's forum, they have a list of recommended drives but some people are complaining that some drives get very hot.

Does anyone have experience they would like to share or recommendations? Looking to get 128GB or 256GB

Thanks

I would look at whichever one is the fastest in your budget at the capacity you want.

I actually just used this article's argument in favor of a Lexar P20 for speed. It's been running great for me.

I don't think NVIDIA's list of "recommended" drives is anything more than a half-assed "we plugged this in and didn't have a problem" experiment. If they wanna do a list, make one with drives that wouldn't work, cuz that'd be a hell of a lot shorter.

If it's that popular Ultra Fit drive that's getting the heat issues, then I would say duh, that heat being dissipated over that small of a drive will definitely not be good for the Shield or the drive. I actually use a short USB cable to extend my P20 away from the Shield console just so it doesn't put any stress while plugged into the port.

Get a cheap enclosure and an actual SSD. Using a USB Key to expand storage is not good... Unless you want to lose everything when the drive fails. Because it will. A WHOLE LOT faster than a real SSD.
