Do you have a problem with your Mi Box?

by bobhays

I'm really interested in getting the Mi Box because of it's price and 4k support. The problem is I'm constantly hearing about problems with the Mi Box, either video stuttering, Netflix not working, audio, or some other apps not working right.

I was just wondering if this was just me seeing posts of the few people who have problems, or if these problems are a common occurrence.

I have a mi box that I use with 1080p TV. I don't have any problems.

Zero problems with my Mi Box. Fast, no crashing. Netflix, Vue, YouTube, Live Channels, and both Kodi and SPMC works perfectly for me. Sometimes have to restart Kodi, but I think it's the app.

No problem. I use 3 in my household and 1 is on a 4K TV.

  • video stutter? Only on 4k h.264 encoded videos which is rare.
  • Netflix not working? HDCP 1.x support up to 1080p, HDCP 2.2 = 4k.
  • Audio? Confirmed working w/ Kodi 17 using 4K AVR, HD Audio works.

Usually the rants come from people who try to make a purely locked down product work for something other than it's purpose. As an android tv box, it's supposed to be less configurable to avoid problems and protects IP copyright holders. Those who try to circumvent it (rooting, modding, hacking) will always complain.

Love it, have 2

Every box has issues. Looks on this reddit and you'll see people complaining about the Nvidia Shield having problems.

Just pick a box and if you don't like it, return it and find another one.

Only minor issues.

5.1 wasn't supported over optical regardless of my settings. I had an old receiver that supported HDMI video only. Figured it was time for an upgrade, so thats taken care of.

Netflix 4K doesn't work. It worked with the previous combination of old receiver + HDMI switch (HDCP 2.2) + Non HDCP 2.2 TV. With the new receiver it doesn't work regardless of where the HDCP stripper is in the chain. I know that its an issue with my setup though, not the MiBox. Other than that, Netflix works great and 4K via Plex works fine as well.

The Netflix problem is something like a batch issue. I returned mine and the new one worked perfectly. Just give everything a run-through when you first get it and if everything runs smoothly, you're good. Love mine.

Have no major problems to be honest.

On my 4k TV, even when set at 1080 resolution, I was having problems with HDCP levels being set. Sometimes it would come up as "unprotected", other times"1.X", or "2.2". This made playing Netflix unreliable. It worked great for non-DRM stuff though.

Put it on my older 1080 plasma, and it has no problems holding "1.X" HDCP level.

I still think it's a great box, just has some issues with certain TVs (or maybe it is just the specific box I got).

Can't read from an external USB drive formatted as mac os extended. Apparently can't read exfat either, so I am shit out of luck using an OSX laptop to transfer files to the usb.

My problem is I wasn't able to get 5.1 audio from it using ARC from the TV to reciever.

igotthisone

I've had tons of problems with mine, but it's good enough for the price. Just buy one.

groac

perfect, my problems have been fixed in a previous update!

I have two and have no problems with them using Netflix and spmc primairly. I do not do 4k so unfortunately can't comment on how well 4k content works

My only issue is hardware related, in that I wish it had an ethernet port. I tried a USB one, but it would go to sleep or something every few days and fall back to wifi without me noticing.

I use it in 4K, with Netflix, Plex, Youtube and sometimes Kodi. I have basically no issues with any of the apps anymore. At one point I had troubles with Netflix, but it works fine now (I have no idea what I did other than a factory reset at the beginning). I haven't run into audio sync issues with Plex either, perhaps because I don't use AC3 files (I'm not sure; everything I watch is autodownloaded from usenet). YouTube used to have skipping issues with 60fps videos, but that was resolved in a past update.

I had issues with the Emby app freezing up pretty regularly, but I've stopped using it.

Overall, I'm pretty happy; I think it's actually surpassed my Fire TV as my favorite streaming device. I just wish it had an ethernet port.

I have issues with mi box crashing if I don't shut it down before I leave for work. That's about it. No app issues. Running on older Samsung.

Use mine with a 4k LG TV. No problems with video. Some lag playing Asphalt 8.

CateyeRR

Voice search has stopped working for me. It won't pick up any sound at all. Might try a factory wipe and see if that helps.

frg2005

I've used mine for a couple of months. Only 1080p, I watch lots of YouTube, some Netflix, Twitch, Spotify. I tried some games but don't really game on it. No troubles to report.

nolookjones

have no big issues but only use 1080p and 5.1 dts/dd and mainly spmc, netflix, youtube, Google music.

some small issues are broken chromecast that needs reboot to fix and harmony bt smart hub support were both broken with latest updates.

PsionStorm

I have a MiBox connected to my Denon receiver as pass-through, into a Samsung 1080p TV.

I use Playstation Vue, Netflix, Plex, and other apps regularly. I don't try to play games on it, it never tries to use 4K, and it works pretty well mostly.

The only issue I've ever run into is using Plex with the receiver turned on. Everything will be fine for 5-10 seconds, and then the video will leap forward 10 seconds, with the audio delayed behind it. If the receiver is off and I'm using the TV speakers, this issue doesn't occur. I haven't had a chance to do a firmware update on the receiver yet, unfortunately.

Other than that, it does what I need it to do, but I'm not really doing anything crazy either.

Purchased Mi Box on July 5, 2017, used for three weeks using NBN FTTN Service in Australia, of course buffering occurred as usual and the picture froze, but when it started to clear the Mi Box proceeded to release bit by bit while trying to catch up and any talking was also lost until it caught up and proceeded as usual unitl the next buffering took place. I also have a MINIX NEO X8-H Plus and it does not do this, it simply stops and only plays when all bits have been collected, a much better idea.

The "Ultra HD Deep Color" setting resets to "no" every time I turn the Mi Box and/or TV off, which means I have to go into the settings every time I want to watch anything. Really annoying.

And also, no DTS in Plex via toslink.
