Mi Box on Dorm/University WiFi?

by Vold101

My Chromecast doesn't work with my dorm's WiFi for various reasons. For one, all of the devices are hidden from each other so I can't connect the Chromecast using the set-up process on my phone. I also can't set up a private WiFi network because that violates policy.

So, my idea was to get a Mi Box for $69. My question is, is the Wi-Fi set up process non-reliant on my Google Pixel? As long as I have access to the box's MAC address, I should be able to get it set up.

It's completely independent from phones. I would try and find out if anyone has rokus or even other mi boxes working before spending the money though.

I used to have my Chromecast gen 1 work at my Uni dorm with work around using Connectify Hotspot.

You can sideload chrome though you will need a mouse and keyboard to sign in to the network

Sideload chrome before you try to connect if there is a web portal. If you have to just register the Mac, that's available in the settings.

You only need your Google pixel if you want to set up your accounts with one click, but if you are not afraid to set up your Google account and other typical "setup for new Android phones and tablets" things. In that case your university Internet will be enough.

But if you really want to use the one click solution, then you could use WiFi sharing on your phone and connect your Mi Box to your phone.

This above method should also let you setup the chromecast, but I'm not sure if you would be able to connect it afterwards if the dorm Internet is heavily locked down.
