Transferring files from OS X to nvidia Shield TV

by mriutta

Hello everyone. I made the jump from a Roku 4 to the Shield TV last week, and I'm loving it. The only thing that is stumping me is that I can't transfer files from my Mac to the Shield. I've tried all the suggestions in this post including using ES File Explorer to set up a FTP server that my Mac can connect to, but when I connect, the folder is locked (as in, I can see the folders, but I can't add to them). Anybody have any suggestions?

On the Shield go into the Settings and then into Storage & Reset and there should be an option for "Over local network". Turn it on, setup a user name/pass and on your Mac in the finder hit Apple+K (or Go>Connect to Server...) and enter the address your Shield listed and it should prompt for the user/pass you specified. Login and you should see the file folders and the ability to drag files into them.

I've also gone thru this issue myself as a mac user.

In my case I installed an app called Sambadroid on the Android TV box (you may have to sideload it). With Sambadroid, any drives attached to the TV box can have read/write privileges from my Mac.

There's one more way, slightly round about way.

  1. Download the apk for 'Airdroid' (via apkpure or similar on your Mac and copy it on a USB drive)
  2. Download ES file explorer on your shield via the play store
  3. Insert usb drive into shield and using ES explorer copy the AirDroid Apk onto the shield
  4. Install Airdroid via ES explorer
  5. Install sideload launcher via the play store
  6. Open AirDroid via Sideload launcher
  7. No need to sign in, it will give you a local address (e.g. 192.168.0.0)
  8. Open a browser window on your Mac and enter this address.
  9. You now have access to your shield on your Mac and can transfer files back and forth.

This method takes a bit of work, but makes life super easy once everything is installed and running.
