Can an Android box be used as a Plex server?

by ShivaDontShiv

My current setup for watching our video library:

  1. files saved on external hard drive connected to router
  2. Plex server installed on our one desktop that is mostly on 24/7
  3. Use Plex to watch files on tv, iPads & laptops

The problem is that sometimes the desktop loses connection to the networked hard drive (solved by just opening the folder in Windows Explorer). And sometimes if the desktop is being used for gaming, it causes stuttering etc when trying to play files.

I'm wondering if an Android TV box can

  1. have a hard drive connected to it
  2. share said hard drive on the local network
  3. run Plex server off the Android box

Thoughts?

It sounds like you're asking if some shitty box running regular touchscreen Android can handle being a Plex server. With no transcoding? It would probably be able to server up files directly. We don't really talk about those Android boxes here though. We talk specifically about the devices that run Google's Android TV operating system that was designed for the living room.

The nvidia Shield TV runs Plex server, not sure about any others.

I have a 3TB external HD connected to my Android box, works flawlessly. Also have a 256 USB drive on it as well.

shield tv and Mi box although the Mi box is spotty in digesting some Plex files.

I wouldn't even recommend using the Shield as your Plex server.
