Nvidia shield

Is the new nvidia shield worth the price tag?

Yes. I just upgraded to a Shield from a nexus player. 100% worth it.

Some of the things I've noticed so far - everything feels much snappier and in general faster, the shield has an Ethernet port for faster and more reliable networking, the emulator support for the Shield controller is better and requires less fiddling, Amazon prime tv app. My Nexus still works fine but now that I'm using Shield I don't think I'd ever go back.

It's nearly identical to the old one, and it's the same price but comes with a free remote. So.. yes.

I'd look for an older one just because it has an SD card slot, unless u plan on getting the pro version.

I literally just hooked mine up about an hour ago. Streaming PS Vue and it is much better than when I tried the other day on my PS3.

Remote is actually pretty nice, feels premium. Synced w my phone very quickly to log into my accounts.

Only issue is I just found out that my internet provider Xfinity hasn't approved Android TV, so I cannot log in to HBO Go (which is included with my internet package).

I have to scream YES! I have 2 Nvidia Shield TV's for two TVs. I have a shield Tablet (for portable shield tvs when I go on trips), and it works nice since I also have an android phone.

  1. Cord cutting. I consume all my media though this box now. Netflix, youtube, Plex from my DVD Plex server. Life has improved ditching the boob tube

  2. Gaming. I'm getting to be a grumpy gills in my old age of (early 30s). Been gaming since I was 4 or 5 on NES. AAA games and the industry is moving to a more open world sandbox focus which kills a lot of games for me. I've got a family now and so game time is much more sparse. I appreciate a more focused 8 to 16 hour game over 100 hour grind fest rpgs or open world games for the most part. This is where the Shield really replaced my PC/PS4 gaming needs.

It has just enough fun local multiplayer games for when friends come over. And then it allows me to put all my old retro games on one device. I have all my old games still but it's a hassel getting an CRT out and hooking up 5+ consoles. So this is a much better reason for me.

Cross-platform gaming. This is unique for me. I can play retro games on emulators on my shield tv and then use Google Drive as a cloud based save storage (much like PS+). Google gives you 15 GB free and that's more than enough, you only need a few hundred MB. So I sync my data there, then I can continue playing on my phone at work or when im out. or on my tablet (ghetto switch). Anytime i switch devices i sync with the cloud storage and im ready to go. They have apps to sync for you.

  1. Tablet. When I travel for vacation bringing this tablet is bring 5 gaming consoles, youtube, kodi, netflix, amazon prime and it's easy to carry. Hell i even have some small controllers and one HDMI cord and you have your entertainment system with you where ever you go.

TLDR: I enjoy my SHield TV because it's replaced my gaming consoles for what I need in my games. It replaced my cable for what I need in TV shows (only watch a few). It's got corded ethernet and a memory card slot (get the older one).
