I don't see broadcast standards changing any time soon. The HDTV transition took a long time, and many areas still aren't even caught up with it. Also, 8K will never be a thing in the home. It may have its uses in high end movie theaters, but the vast majority of people who own 4KTVs aren't even seeing the full 4K resolution on their screens, due to the very high size/distance ratio required for that. The requirement to see 8K worth of resolution would be absurd screen sizes.
A typical viewing distance is about 8ft. From that distance, you would need a 235" screen to see the full benefit of 8K, and you would need at bare minimum 118" to see any benefit over 4K at all (and more likely, you'd need somewhere in the middle of the two for it to be worth it at all)
8K is never happening for home theater usage. Even for 8K computer monitors you're looking at 60-88" which is still ridiculous.
1080p, 4K and HDR are definitely useful benefits, but even those I only see happening over cable/satellite/streaming. I just don't see the broadcast system changing over again until the vast majority of people out there have the technology to make use of the new standards.

If they want me to watch that Cheetos ad, they have a better chance of having that happen if it is 4K. Resolution skews my viewing habits more than most things.
