Any idea please? I just bought it and I've tried changing the batteries and nothing will work. I can't use the phone app as to complete device setup the remote must be paired. I don't know what to do; I literally bought a brand new, broken device.

try to put a mouse or a keyboard and go to settings and update your mi box to the latest build 750.. I had 2 friends got frustrated and can't pair the remote on the stock firmware when it arrived. after updating everything went fine.
During initial setup process you are guided by a wizard. Did you get this wizard on initial startup?
Power down and try again.

I had the same exact problem. Put good quality new batteries in it!!! I'm not kidding
The remote is finicky, try reboot the box and good batteries.
I think you have to hold the back button and the voice control button at the same time? I might be wrong though.
