Is Mi box download speed using web browser and speedof.me accurate?

by dave1253

I am trying to tweak my download speed on my TP Link Archer C7. I upgraded the firmware, tweaked the MTU (1492). Getting 64 Mbps down 25 Mbps up on the other side of the house using 5ghz WiFi on my laptop.

I have a mi box halfway between the laptop and the router and I am testing speed with speedof.me using a browser getting at best 10 Mbps/6 Mbps at best on 5 ghz.

I rebooted the Mi and the router multiple times turning on and off WMM. With WMM off, the laptop speeds decreased dramatically (23/15).

I'm wondering if the readings on the Mi box are accurate, otherwise what else could explain such a difference?

You can try the built-in speed test in the Netflix app.

No time to check the Mi box this morning however on a Nexus Player I noticed a significant difference between the speed test in the Netflix app and using the Web Browser and speedof.me.

Download speed on Netflix was 33 Mbps compared to about 18 Mbps using speedof.me on the same box.

I'm guessing the Mi box results will be similar.

I have this annoying issue with the MiBox as well.

I bought a brand new ASUS dual band router to supply efficient bandwidth for the MiBox, but the speed on the MiBox is all over the place.

Testing with me phone at the MiBox it will get 30+Mbps, but testing on the MiBox it only gets 3Mbps. I then switch between 5 and 2.4 Ghz and then at times the other band flies in speed testing.

Sometimes it's better in 2.4Ghz and worse in 5Ghz and switching it seems to make a difference. But mostly a reboot sorts the issue out.

It's very annoying since streaming buffers a lot when it happens. As you can see I haven't yet put my finger on it. I'm hoping that the Nougat update will fix this issue.

I have considered opening the MiBox to see if the antennas maybe got loose.

If you're just testing your wifi speed you can do a lan file transfer and see what speeds you get. Much more reliable then going out to the internet which would be affected by the server your testing with and your ISP speed.

I usually test to/from my ethernet connected file server and kodi file manager on the android tv. Copying a file in kodi will display the transfer speed.

Alternatively you can use a ftp server app on the android tv box and browse it with filezilla on a computer if you're not comfortable with the kodi file manager.

Just tested with Netflix and the Mi box. Netflix says I'm getting 33Mbps so speedof.me for some reason is different. I don't get buffering on 1080p, so whatever it is, it's sufficient.

I was thinking of putting a powerline adapter on this box, but at these speeds I'm not sure it would make a difference.

Upstairs, powerline adapters have been amazing. In places I get no WiFi at all, I get numbers in the 30s.

I sideloaded the Speedtest.net apk (requires a forced landscape mode setup) & get 50+MB DL max on the 1 of my 2 Boxes furthest from my router.. considering my connection is 500/50, it not that great in comparison, but it never buffers & plays everything, even streams, just fine.

I have a 40Mbps VDSL line and I have an ASUS 1200Mbps AC wireless router, but I have very inconsistent speeds with the MiBox.

I have changed channels and settings but the speed is still a problem and inconsistent.

I have placed my Sony Xperia Z5 next to MiBox and test the speed with Speedtest and I get +- 30Mbps on 5.8 Ghz. the using the same app on the MiBox I hardly get 3 or 4 Mbps.

On 2.4 Ghz I get better speeds on the MiBox, but it's very inconsistent in it's tests. Sometimes in the 30+Mbps and doing another test right after that it below the 10Mbps range.

I'm starting to think I have a faulty MiBox.

I wouldn't be surprised. Many people have said that the Mi Box can't handle 1080p/60 and 4K/60 without stuttering. I have no issues with mine but I mainly just use Netflix and Kodi in 1080p. But there is probably performance issues with this box including WiFi. Hopefully it'll improve with Android N but could be the hardware.
