YouTube TV app as a measure of Google commitment

by fookineh

I've been thinking that how quickly we get a native Android TV app can serve as a good indicator of how committed Google really is to the platform.

Because if we don't see it for months or ever, that pretty much tells us what we all fear, that this isn't much of a priority.

Hell, there's still no Google photos app!

Thoughts?

No Youtube Music either. :-/

I'm willing to bet that YouTube TV comes sooner to the Apple TV than Android TV.

Geez people. Yes Google has a history of abandoning products but they aren't stupid. With how much they are putting into Android TV with some great updates lately and with Google Assistant coming out soon it will certainly get the YouTube TV app.

It's a staged rollout. DirectTV now was a giant fuck up when it came out because they tried to release to everyone at the same time.

Google wants to get into as many homes as possible and this is another great way for them to.

Check when the latest update to the YouTube app was... Hint, its been forever

My YouTube app has a "Get YouTube TV" section. I'm not subscribed so it doesn't do anything but it is there.

The amount of Android TV apps is really a jokeat least we have the most important ones, but that's not a big deal...every TV platform has.

cmason37

Wow. Is it really not integrated into the normal app? So they made a new TV app that their TVs can't use... lol how pathetic.

You can at least cast it, right?

I think the fact that they didn't launch for Android TV that they are not at all committed to Android TV above OS updates. What would Amazon Prime Video look like not being available on the Fire TV. Or Playstation Vue only being available on mobile devices and not the Playstation? This is a pitifully poorly thought out strategy. The one thing YouTube is known for is being available everywhere and on everything. Of course maybe I'm just jealous because I can't get it.

I'm sure there is some legal sides to it. It will come at some point if they plan to compete with the big dogs (sling Netflix Amazon)

Agreed.

I love the crap out of my Nexus Player and was happy to pick up a MiBox for my Dad and stepmother but the lack of YouTube TV with integration with the Live Channels app had me concerned. My goal was to save up for a Nvidia ShieldTV with the larger hard drive but if Google is just going to abandon the platform there's not much point in investing in it is there? May have to look into a Playstation or see what's going on with the new Xbox instead....

The website mentions it being available on Android TV. Though that meant that the app was already available, or that the existing YouTube app acted as the entry point.

I'm still waiting for a network speedtest app. And also Slacker Radio to port over and join Google Home support.
