Are your 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands on separate SSIDs? If so, connect to the 5 GHz SSID and have your device forget the 2.4 GHz connection from the WiFi settings.
Were you able to connect to 5ghz? Im having the same problem.

If it's 1 ft away, why don't you use Ethernet?
