Mi Box - anyone got an eternal USB drive to work as removable storage?

I formatted a usb stick to fat32, put a video file on it, and plugged it into the mi box, but it doesn't give me an option to browse it. If I format it with the Mi Box and then plug the usb into the computer to put something on it, the drive isn't recognised and I have to reformat.

Anyone successfully use a USB drive as external storage on the Mi Box, and if so how did you achieve this wizardry?

You need an app to browse it with, like VLC or MX Player. I think my drives are Exfat, FWIW. It should just work though.

Check that USB debugging is off in developer options.

This is formatting the USB as internal storage for the Mi Box, so it will specifically not be able to be removed and plugged into the PC to transfer files without reformatting.
