Smaller TV with android TV?

by nebulight

I know this is a long shot, but I don't really need a super large TV. I'm looking at around 32-40 inch. Are there any TVs that have Android TV?

I'd recommend a high quality dumb TV (Vizio still makes these, calls them "home theater displays" or something like that) and an Android TV box. Dollars to donuts the Android part of the TV will be outdated way before the TV part is, and that's much cheaper to upgrade, even if you go with something like a Shield.

Sony has a 43" x800D, 4K and HDR.

What's your viewing distance?

I'm going to go against the grain and recommend the LeEco X43. I got it for $349, and at that price I could not find a comparable 4K "dumb" tv. AndroidTV was just the cherry on top. I looked high and low for a cheap 40-inch Samsung, LG, Hisense, Sony...but none could fit my budget and provide 4K. There were plenty at $300-$400 range, but they were all 1080p, and just plain looked cheap (thick, big bezels, plasticky). So I took a shot at the LeEco and was pleasantly surprised at the design as well as the picture quality.

It's far from a perfect AndroidTV device as it has the stupid LeEco apps plastered all over it and is non-removable. But live channels with my hdhomerun works extremely well, and all the apps I've tried out so far (Kodi, Netflix, casting...) works smoothly. I think my Nexus Player is still the better device, but the LeEco is certainly much smoother and faster. If it turns out LeEco goes bankrupt (likely) and the TV is forever stuck at 6.0, you can still go out and get a Mi Box or a Shield. But as it is, it's hard/impossible to find a dumb 4K TV and a Mi Box for less than $350.
