New Apps for Android TV Platform

by andyb0218

I find myself on the fence about my next streaming player. Hands down getting another Shield would be my preference since it's the best from a hardware perspective.

With that said, I am fairly certain when Hulu launches their live service next month, there will be no sign of an Android TV app. I realize it will have cast functionality, but I already know that won't pass the wife test. I rejoiced when PS Vue finally released their Android TV app, but I am sure this app was low on the priority list for Sony just like it likely is for Hulu simply due to the fact that Android TV is likely a small piece of the pie in the streaming set top box market.

Makes me sick that I am considering an Apple TV, but that's where I'm at.

Honestly, if im not going to do AndroidTV my next choice is Roku. Have always been an Android TV guy but bought a new TV with Roku built in about a month ago and man I really like the interface. Super fluid and just works.

Consider Roku before Apple TV. Apple TV doesn't have Amazon, Vudu, or Google play movies, or any 4k playback if you will ever upgrade your tv.

That being said, I like my Shield a lot more than any roku I have owned. Doesn't need every app, just the ones I use.

It's a streaming media box man. It's not a personal identity. Step it back.

I'm an all Apple guy but Shield is still a way better box IMO, which is why I replaced my ATV with one.

You've cited zero evidence to back up this assumption.

PS VUE just got the update to it's guide that shows sports scores. It hit my Shield last week I think and that was probably 2 weeks after it hit PS 4. Once the apps have hit Android TV they seem to get new updates pretty often it's the launch of the app that takes some time. Seems to me to be around 6 months at the latest. Hulu will probably take some time for it's initial launch on Android TV. I read Direct TV Now is coming also.

What's with the assumption of no ATV app for Hulu Live?

Having to cast is going to be annoying....but I can't let go of my SHIELD, if nothing else, it's my PLEX server. It would be kind of annoying having to also get a Roku...I suppose I could just use my PS3, but that's still annoying.

If app availability is your primary criteria, your first and last choice should be Roku, IMHO. That's the one platform that seems to be everyone's priority to support. Apple has some very big holes in their support as well (Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, etc.), and there's no guarantee they'll be one of the first to get Hulu's new service on board either.

That said, I switched from Roku to the Shield because of the hardware, Plex Media Server, and Gamestream. And the holes they had in apps are rapidly being closed up, so I'm quite happy with my choice.
