I'm using Kodi/Plex for kodi as my main media player. I find it does everything fine. But apparently SPMC is more optimized for Android TV's, what benefits does it have over the kodi app?

I've had both Kodi and SPMC co-exist in the same device so I think you can as well and see which you like best.
I have a fire TV.box and ran with SPMC for a good amount of time, I never once seen it change refresh rates or anything like people say. One day I tried to watch a show and all a sudden when I booted it up, SPMC loaded, but I saw nothing just the empty background and I. Oukd see the sidebar but that was it. No menu no icons I had. No anything.
I since uninstalled it, and am now running Kodi 17. Works exactly he same as SPMC did and at this point I'm not spending all the time to re set up SPMC like I had it when it failed me once slreaxy. When I was trying to watch a new episode of walking dead !!!
I am using a 2015 model of Sony android tv. My impression is that it does not run kodi 17 as smoothly as kodi 16. It definitely takes longer to watch a popular movie via kodi. I switched to spmc and it seems that it runs as well as kodi 16.
I'm in a 2016 Sony Android TV SPMC works fine. Reason I used it is because of the optional voice search bonus.
On my XD93 Kodi 17 actually runs better and smoother than SPMC - mostly because the theme development for version 16 has stopped and most of them are old, buggy and obsolete :/
I couldn't really find any benefit of SPMC anymore.
You can run both and see. I have them both on mine.
Integrate to leanback is a big one. MySQL from menus is handy. Audio and auto-refresh rates for some devices, not sure that would benefit a TV like it does FTV2 and shield.
