Would you recommend a Shield (TV Box)?

by JoeFCaputo0113

Right now, I have the Firestick (gen 2) in my bedroom, but for my living room I want something more powerful, and I was reallyyy looking into the Shield. Seems perfect for me to be honest. I was thinking of selling my Xbox 1 to get it/help pay for it (last time I touched my Xbox was 2-3 months ago!).

I do not have cable TV in my apartment, I would be using the Shield as my main source of content (Hulu/DirecTV App/Kodi-->Exodus/Phoenix/Pro Sports/etc.). What do ya'll think? Thanks!

Get one. Now. You need it. It'll be great for you. The remote sucks, so just use the controller.

Buying a Shield TV is a good idea. Hardware is great. Too bad Google doesn't promote Android TV more though. Like where is the support for YouTube TV?

ha, you sound just like me.

I use it for Kodi, Youtube, Netflix, Gaming. I have never looked back. Also I'm an Indie game developer hobbiest, so making games with LIBGDX and deploying them on the Device is pretty rad.

I have a PS4 that is collecting dust. My Wii-U just got brushed off for Zelda BOTW, but it's been uplayed since I"ve beaten it. But my Shield TV, gets used for TV, Sports, and gaming almost every night. There are some fantastic games on the device. Lots of great indies coming from steam every month. Tomb Raider, and the witness just came over. And I have 80GB of Retrogaming on the device which I love.

For me the game industry has gotten to a point where I don't fit in. I can't game for 100 hours on an RPG, or pay $200 for a game + season pass + DLC, etc. I have a family, and limited time to game. So replaying my favorites growing up really gives me a way to relax, but also playing some fanstatic games on the Shield Platform are great.

I've had the chance to use a Roku 3, Firestick(gen 1 and 2) and Shield TV. Hands down the best one is the Shield TV. I think my favorite part is the universal search that actually searches my Plex server too. The remote volume is a little janky but the rest of it is awesome.

We have android tv (nexus, mibox and shield) rokus and fire tv(stick and box). The best way i can put it would be my non tech wife telling me the shield is the best thing i ever bought

We have a Nexus Player in our bedroom and a Shield TV (2017) in the living room. The Shield is the best streaming box that we've ever owned. Gaming with it is a nice added bonus, but just as a multimedia device, it's pretty great.

If the price point doesn't scare you off, get one. We love ours.

If you don't need the gaming aspect of it go for the mini box at Walmart. Saves you $130 and if Google or someone releases a better box in the near future you won't be out much. But the shield is fast and reliable and gaming in it is great. No DirecTV now app yet though so keep that in mind. That is unless you use unofficial hacked older versions that only do live TV and no on demand.

I would recommend it too. In case you are looking for something cheaper. Try the Xiaomi Mi Box for 69.

You can get it from Walmart, in case yours present the known issues with Netflix, you can return it and then get another MI Box / The Shield.

PD: In case you buy it directly from Xiaomi and it presents issues, ask them for a return. They will give you a Texas-based adress where you can ship it back

My Shield makes my Fire TV feel like a VCR. And I used to like my Fire TV.

It all depends. For just streaming, the Mi Box or Fire Box ($69 and $79) are probably the best for the price (pick by your preference to UI and Prime service). The fire stick is laggy as hell, as I'm sure you know, and Roku can't do Kodi. If you want gaming than pay the extra for Shield. That's the honest answer.

Hell yes. I use mine every day. It's a great device and I'm glad I bought it.
