Are external DVD/Blu-ray drives supported either by native Android tv or in the kodi for Android tv application?

I was just wondering if I could make my shield tv 2017 as my default media player (including my local media). I currently have ps4 as my Blu-ray player, but if I get a drive that supports 4k Blu-ray disk then could I use shield for 4k Blu-ray player.

You might be able to cobble something together with Kodi (no promises there) but you're going to have a lot of trouble (if you even manage to get it working at all!) playing any commercial titles as they have encryption which needs to be removed in order to play and usually that requires special blu-ray decoding software on other platforms (PowerDVD on Windows for example)

Remember that 4K Blu-Ray is a separate standard from regular Blu-Ray .

You want a 4K Blu-Ray drive that connects to your Shield over USB? The first problem is that right now in the US, we only have 4K Blu-Ray players, not standalone drives.

Pioneer released one USB model in Japan, but there is no word on when/if they will release it in the US.

I'm pretty sure at this point, all the major movie studios do not want the ability to copy 4K Blu-Rays in the hands of consumers. Also, the consumer demand for optical drives is a small fraction of what it once was.
