Say I wanted to root my Nvidia Shield, what are the benefits of rooting Android TV?
I root my phone to block ads. I haven't found a reason to root my shield.
I've rooted my chinese Android TV boxes. I did it to enable apps that needed it. In my case I had to modify them to do the job of my former HTPC (file sharing, bittorrent). It does the job cheaper than running a power hungry PC.

Personally I like rooting to have full access to the system. It comes in handy from time to time.
Ad-blocking and I believe it's the only way to install certain plugins for the Plex Server if you use that
