Since there is no native SMB share, how can I transfer files from computer to the Mi Box? I've been plugging and unplugging the disk from Mi Box to computer and back to transfer files but seriously what am I? A caveman?

ES file explorer offers an FTP I find real handy. I hate what the app has become though with the cleaner and ads, so I'm still on 4.0.2.3 sadly unless you repack this version the play store will update it. I did that and have no issues.
I just recently set this up myself, its dead easy: install the Olive Tree FTP server (free version) on the box, adjust settings accordingly then turn it on. On your desktop you simply log in via FileZilla or whatever and download/upload to your hearts content. You will get the fastest transfer speeds if both the box and your desktop are on a wired ethernet connection.
File manager is probably the easiest. There are free ones out the. File Commander is pretty good but costs is $2.50 (it's $5 but goes "on 50% off sale" pretty much every week. Pay once and it works on any phone, tablet, and TV that uses Android). If you use it, turn off notifications, else it starts on every boot up. ES is free but is sketchy as hell in my opinion.
If you use a file manager than you can use most major cloud drives.
Can you not create a shared drive on your computer and use a file explorer on the mi box to access it?
