USB Drives or SD Cards - Which is Best for Shield TV?

by makhay

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to expand the storage on my shield TV and I noticed that Nvidia released their list of recommended usb drives. However, I know the shield supports microsd cards up to UHS-I Class 3 speeds. Are MicroSD cards a better option for the shield when it comes to speed? I mainly will use it for videos and some games.

What do you reccomend or is there no big difference between the two.

A quality USB 3.0 flash drive is faster than a quality micosd card. Make sure you look at user posted speeds before selecting one, dont just buy the cheapest per GB. The only benefit to getting microsd is size, and if you want to recycle it into use into a phone or camera.

I actually wouldn't take that USB drive list as gospel. I use a Lexar P20 with zero issues, which is not on the list, and recently someone posted about issues with one of the drives in NVIDIA's list.

Avoid the Lexar S45, there is a compatibility issue with this drive and the Nvidia Shield. The SDCZ43-128G-GAM46 seems to work OK.
