Recommend Best Sound System for Nvidia Shield TV ?

by feclar

Recently moved and finally building out a media room.

I picked up a Sonos 5.1 Setup (soundbar+sub+2rears) (best buy returnable). Obviously it trumps my old 100$ sound bar setup from 4 years ago.

This is a dedicated TV/Gaming room so the features of sonos for music/multiroom/phone are not really relevant to me.

Basically I am willing to pay best BANG for the buck and would prefer 700$ but will spend 2k$ if it is worth it. I am not really an audiophile but I do think 300$ headphones are worth it as I can definitely tell the difference.

Also not a fan of optical cable as it means I cant control volume from the players/tv remote. I saw something about HDMI-ARC that I am going to go research now, the sonos does not have this.

p.s. Shield TV currently allows for DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-HD MA, DD, DD+, and DD THD passthrough

edit - sorry forgot to mention it NEEDS TO BE WIRELEES

Seriously check out /r/hometheater

But be warned, that place can be dangerous.

Here is my current set up:

AVR : Sony 7.2

Center : Klipsch RP-250C

Fronts : Klipsch R-14M

Rears : Klipsch R-14S

Sub : Bic America 12

I deff spent less than $1000 and I love my set up. One thing that saved me a lot of money was buying open box on Ebay from an authorized seller. The other nice thing about piecing it together like this is that you can very easily upgrade one set of speakers over time.

You're looking for a Home Theater setup.

begin your research on google and youtube because in terms of Home Theater setups... it's all wildly subjective as your ears are different from other people in terms of what pleases you.

Your Sonos system is certainly good, but that is mainly in the ease of setup and streaming service support. If you are willing to to run wires to individual speakers and just do streaming from the Shield or any other device you can get a much better system with a typical AV receiver and some good speakers.

I am currently using a Shield and the Denon AVR-S720W with a Vizio TV and the HDMI-CEC functions work great. I can use the Shield remote to turn on the Shield and it will turn the whole system on and switch to the right input. You would not need HDMI-ARC as all your inputs would be on the receiver.

For $1130 you could get:

I started backwards - needed a good sound system, then got a shield after realizing Arc on my TV going to my speakers sucked.

Look for a high quality receiver capable of 4k pass through, and upgradable to 7.1 (if that's your end game). Then camp on frys to find good deals on either bookshelf speakers and a good center and sub. I have a 3.1 with bookshelf speakers, center, and suvwolfer. Budget was total around 800 but the sound quality is incredible.

Feel free to ask me questions - I started as a noob in this space

Pick up a Denon receiver from http://www.accessories4less.com/ . I would recommend one with Audessey MultiEQ XT32. Trust me.

For speakers, pick Def Tech from Ebay seller http://stores.ebay.com/baja-waverunner?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 .

I would recommend PC2000 center and PM1000 for front & surround. You can downgrade to PC1000 & PM800 if cost is an issue.

Or you can buy a package:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Definitive-Technology-ProCinema-800-BLACK-5-1-HT-Speaker-System-QEMA-/192111404188

Total cost ~$1,400 but best bang for the buck and worth it.

(Update) Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with or benefit from the sellers listed above.

Can you point me at any info that gets DTS-HD working on the shield? Try as I might it won't do it for me.

Don't get a Samsung TV, they're not as open as LG in terms of hdr formats.
