My app will not connect to my shield anymore, I deleted the app and reinstalled it and same thing. It shows up under connections but just won't connect,. I tried restarting the shield but same thing. Are there any ports or anything I can forward on my network? It used to work fine

There's an app on the TV side called "Android TV Remote Service." Maybe try uninstalling-update/clearing-user-cache on that app? (and probably a reboot after that).
Had this since the April app update ... fixed it!
Did two things, on the shield clear the Android TV Remote cache and renamed the shield. Rebooted and the TV control app re-authenticated and now works fine.
Same thing happened to me yesterday with the Nexus Player. I finally did get it to connect only to be disconnected the next time I grabbed my phone.
Yeh its pretty bad connecting to my Nexus player as well
Try uninstalling the updates and cleaning the cache
Make sure your phone and shield are on the same network
Also, turn Bluetooth on on your phone
Dude, just buy a dedicated remote on eBay, they're cheap and do the job.
