Nvidia Shield fails to detect my 5.0 wireless band.

by velkro16

Do you guys think this is a Shield issue or is it my router? My other devices pick it up just fine. Any suggestions?

Did you reboot the router? That fixes so many problems.

I'll have a look what mine is when I get back from work next 2hrs.

Go into your routers Wifi settings. You should see settings for the the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz interfaces. I had DD-WRT so my settings page looks like this - http://imgur.com/Tod1qaV

Most recommend that you use the same SSID on both bands, and you device should automatically pick the best interface. But I found my newer devices that could connect to 5GHz never did. I gave the interfaces separate SSIDs, then was able to select the 5GHz SSID and connect properly.

You could also turn off 2.4GHz, but that could cause problems with legacy devices.

It is definitely a Shield issue. I have two of them connected to Google Wifi. ...and it's frustrating.

The Shields will connect to 802.11ac on 5GHz after either booting up or turning off/on WiFi. But after a short while they default to and stay on 802.11n on 2.4GHz.

On the other hand, my Nexus Player is rock solid.

Looks like nVidia has known about the problem for a long while so maybe it will get patched. In the meantime, the best advice is in this thread: change your wireless router settings to split the SSIDs into separate bands.

Had that issue myself. Think I changed the channel in the router settings and it worked.
