Is the Shield a worthwhile upgrade?

by boutdatactionboss21

I have a mi box that is using wireless from an Archer c8 router, and service is 60 mbps. No ethernet as yet as it seems there aren't many reliable ones.

We stream a lot, and mainly have trouble with Kodi streams buffering, but not with mlb.tv and youtube.

With the kodi buffering, I have tried following suggestions to limit this buffering but it has not helped. Sometimes we have to jump to 5 different stream sources but it does not seem to help.

Is this mainly a source issue? I'm considering replacing the mi box with a shield tv. Will this more powerful device be able to stream kodi without the buffering that the mi box experiences? Or will we be in the same position with the mi box due to the sources being slow.

I would say source issue. I have a shield in my living room which is hard wired to my router and a mi box in my bedroom which is upstairs. Although the Mi box is slower than the shield i still usually have no issues with buffering. Also, i have real-debrid and a VPN which could be the difference.

60mbps seems perfectly acceptable for streaming and seeing as Youtube works fine I'd agree that the issue is to do with the sources you're streaming in Kodi.

I'd recommend trying a better quality source, depending on your streaming add-on it's probably scraping from several sites (some good, some bad) so keep trying a different hosts till you find a site that works. Make a list of all the file hosts that work well for you and disable the ones that don't.

You could try a different app for streaming, I hear good things about Terrarium TV. Also using an app on your phone like Showbox to download or stream a movie and then chromecasting it would work too.

I have some skipping and buffering with youtube on a Mi Box. Cant seem to figure it out.

Shield is worth the cost difference imo.

yeah I figured. I was hoping the shield would be a simple solution!

Do you live in the US?

It's a source issue. Kodi runs really well on Mi Box and if you find a good stream than it doesn't have any buffering issues. Try different sources before you pay $200 and get the same issues.

I have both a used 2015 Shield on the way as well as a Mi Box. The Shield is going on our main TV and the Mi Box in a guest bedroom. I'll check back in after I get everything setup and working to give my two cents.
