The new UI is awful

by jmcguire525

I just installed O beta on my NP and I personally hate the direction this is going in. Better recommendations would have been great but I hate this, it's not about getting used to it either.

Good thing you cleared that up after 5 minutes of using it

I just installed O on my Nexus player. First impression was the UI was a cluttered mess with rows and rows of useless recommendations similar to the Fire TV UI. However the flexibility of the UI is starting to grow on me. There is a "Manage Channels" menu which allows you to shut off individual channel recommendations or you can shut off all of the rows of recommendations which is a nice feature. You can even shut off the new "Watch Next" row if you don't want to see it. For now I shut off all the channel rows leaving me with with only the apps row and the Watch Next row showing. The apps row only shows the first 6 apps and the rest of the apps can be seen when you select the app launcher icon or hold down the home button. You can still re-order all the apps. I re-ordered them so that the first six apps are the ones I use most frequently. The UI is not yet finalized so there may be changes before the final release.

Details would be nice...

Dang. At least Google is showing that they are still committed to Android TV which is good news. But at this rate with my Xiaomi MiBox I can't wait to use this new UI in 2024.

Too bad the Shield can't be involved in Google's Beta program. I got rid of my Nexus Player a while ago unfortunately as it was just showing its age compared to newer, better hardware available.

I think until the apps implement the new channels api on the homescreen it will be hard to say how useful the changes are.

I completely agree its horrid, I mean it has some good ideas but its just so boring and does not use its space efficiently. The old design was much better! I made a quick concept of what I would like to see, I Incorporated some design elements from the new and old launcher. Its no where near perfect and I think it may be a little cluttered but I think its an improvement overall.

The new UI is awful

Just played with it on my test Nexus Player, I agree - not a fan (yet, at least)
