check out plex.tv. You would install the plex server on your mac and the Plex app on your Mi Box. Very easy set up.
VLC I think would work. I'm not sure if it can read Mac shares though. I know it can read my windows 10 share and linux share for my NAS.
If it's movies/TV, run a Plex server on your Mac.
Also, the Mi Box runs Android TV. Casting is an option. This is a better option for casting photos or streaming websites. If you want to cast the occasional video file, then give Videostream a try.

You can even install Kodi on it and playback files that way. Assuming Apple allows network file sharing.

Forget about PLEX its not needed and will only complicate matters.
Just use SMB file sharing built into every Mac:
