The only 5.1 channel audio format that works on my mi box is AC3 for some reason. DTS, FLAC, AAC, etc only plays in stereo mode with my receiver. At first, I thought it might have been a problem with Plex and Kodi. I kept changing the settings on both programs but nothing worked. Finally I just plugged in my flash drive and tested a random video file with AAC 5.1 audio. I played it in MX player and VLC and both programs only outputted stereo audio.
I'm not sure if this is a bug affecting all mi boxes or I just received a lemon. If it's a bug a might have to try to return it to walmart (I think I have a month left according to their return policy). It would break my heart to have to return it. Other than the 5.1 audio problem, it works pretty okay in every other area. I just wanted a 1080p streaming box ;_;
The funny thing is that my old crappy 1st gen Amazon fire TV stick, whose interface is so slow now it makes me want to rip my hair out, plays these formats fine in surround sound mode. Also it streams high bitrate (15-20 mbps) video files a lot better than my mi box. When I play these files on my mi box, I get the "connection to the server is not fast enough" error more frequently even though my wireless internet speed is fast enough.
Did anyone update their Mi Box to the Nougot beta and fix this problem? I'm thinking about getting the Amazon fire TV box. I would hate to lose the google cast features though.
-------TL;DR-------
**--**Can't play DTS, FLAC, AAC, etc 5.1 audio files in surround sound mode. Only plays in stereo mode.
**--**Only 5.1 AC3 works weirdly enough
**--**Doesn't work streamed to Plex/Kodi
**--**Doesn't work played directly from USB in VLC or MX player
**--**Works on 1st gen fire TV Stick so no problem specifically with receiver.
**--**Can updating to Nougot solve the problem? Is this a bug on most Mi boxes or is mine a lemon?
Android OS Audio settings needs to be set to HDMI before any Audio passthrough is even attempted. Otherwise expect PCM Audio.
The Android OS is not very good for Lossless (FLAC) audio period. There is no 24bit 192kHz Multichannel PCM audio output. Everything will be resampled and output as 16bit. Its an Android OS limitation.
Kodi: There is not Audio passthrough on any Kodi platform for AAC or FLAC it will be decoded to PCM. 5.1 AAC Audio can be Transcoded to 5.1 AC3 and output.
The Mi Box is fully capable of 5.1/7.1 AC3/DTS/DTS-MA/True-HD/Atmos/DTS:X when using Kodi Krypton so long as settings are properly selected first.
You really should be asking about all this detailed Audio support on the Kodi forums.
