[Mi Box] Netflix 5.1 Audio Issues

by pseudoheld

I finally have 4k working on my Mi Box now after some hdcp issues. Now my only problem left ist that Netflix won't output 5.1 audio.
Here is my setup:
MI Box hooked up to my Philips 43puk7100 TV directly via hdmi.
My TV connected to my (pretty old) Yamaha receiver via optical cable.
I know my receiver can't handle dd+ or TrueHD audio.
However when using the Netflix app on my Windows computer hooked up over the same connection netflix can output 5.1 audio, I just can't get it to work on my Mi Box.
Is it my receiver? Can netflix even tell the receivers capabilities if it's connected to it trough my TV and the optical cable? AFAIK toslink is a one way connection...
Kodi and plex work with 5.1 sound without any issues.

i have the same issue too. tried directly connecting via optical to the Yamaha and through the TV HDMI but no luck. i hope the android N update fixes this.

Does Windows send the DD+ signal to your TV and your TV transcodes to normal DD? Or does Windows send a normal DD signal?

Android is a lot more strict about checking EDIDs than Windows is; while your TV is connected to your TV, read the EDID and see if it is communicating that it supports DD+.

  1. Visit someone with a newer avr and try it there through HDMI.

  2. try playing dd or dts coded .wav files to check if 5.1 output is possible in general. If you don't have a.wav file then maybe a movie trailer with dd audio.

Edit: just saw koddie works fine.

Android TV Netflix on the Mi Box and the Shield needs to have a Dolby Digital plus (DD+) HDMI connected Audio receiver otherwise expect 2.0 PCM Audio in all cases. The App is extremely strict on this.

Nougat does not fix this HDMI Audio receiver requirement.

I waiting for Mi Box update to transcode DD+ -> DD, or Netflix allow the box to do that.
