Here is a copy pasta from XDA This may be more what you're looking for, may require root though.
"If you are on WiFi and have another Android device,get WiFi Adblocker and install it on the other device,and if successful,it changes your DNS numbers to the servers used to block the ads. After that,manually put in those DNS numbers into your connection on the Shield TV and it should now work for blocking ads in browsers,apps,and even YouTube if you use an older version or the old modded YouTube version."

Yah youtube Ads are crazy now.. Forcing everyone to upgrade to Red.. Wish there was a simpler way to block YouTube ads on Android TV and Android phones.
If only adhell worked on Android TV
I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this (if even possible). I guess I'm spoiled with adblock on PC because I never see any youtube ads, watching youtube on my Mibox is almost unbearable. There's an ad after every video and sometimes they even have ads that are like 10 minutes long or more

Wouldn't even use Android/ATV if I couldn't be ad-free.
