Xiaomi Mi Box and kodi 4k resolution problem ?

by mxl2008

hi Q1/ I am unable to change the display resolution within system settings for Kodi 17. It is currently set at 1920x1080p, I am trying to change it to 3840x2160p but the option is grey , The 4K tv I am using is the Vizio P55-C1. I have Kodi 17 installed on the Xiaomi Mi Box. I have the resolution set to 4K 60Hz within the Android settings for Xiaomi Mi Box. Q2/ what is the best 4k video player for Xiaomi Mi Box ? Q3/ how to know that HDR is working in kodi ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do the 4k test: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=261768

Kodi might only show 1080 as the max option for the GUI elements, but it should still output 4K as 4K.

Yes, never can figure this part out either. My shield TV can output 4k to the TV in the GUI settings of Kodi, but the mi box is grayed out and stuck at 1080p. The resolution in the Android settings is still 4k 60. Not sure, hopefully it's something that's easily fixed in future Kodi update.

Most Android TV devices, including the Mi Box, Sony TVs etc, essentially do a "hybrid" 4K output. Apps are rendered at 1080p and upscaled, but (system-decoded) video is native 4K. You can rest assured that Android is smart enough to only upscale the UI and leave the decoded video as-is, but NedSc's test video will prove it to you if necessary. (For best results, disable overscan on your TV as well.)

The NVIDIA Shield is somewhat unique in that it's powerful enough to do the UI at 4K as well.

Android actually is not very smart at all contrary to what is already posted. For example there is No App - Auto 1080p to 2160p (4K) resolution switching like you would seen in 4K Linux/LibreELEC or Windows Kodi boxes.

In fact the Shield is known for poor 1080p > 2160p(4K) upscaling compared to what 4K TV upscaling hardware can do.

Kodi only has a 1080p Desktop, there is no 4K Desktop available it gets upscaled if you are running a 4K Android System Resolution.

You have to manually set a 4K Resolution in Android Settings > Display > Screen Resolution so 4K video content is actually output at 4K. But then any video content that is not 4K is upscaled by the Android media player. The 720/1080p video > upscaled to 4K, picture output quality will not be as good as what a 4K TV can do.

The Best picture quality for your 720/1080p video content displayed on a 4K TV will be produced if you leave the Android system resolution at 1080p.

The Best picture quality for your 4K video content displayed on a 4K TV will be produced if you leave the Android system resolution at 2160p.

You have to do this resolution switching manually in Android settings if you want optimal quality picture outputs.

See how App - Auto Resolution switching would come in real handy ?
