How to watch my regular cable tv and still get android notification from Google Home ?

by ebpomtl

Hi !

I'm not sure if this is doable, and maybe I miss understand Android TV, but there it goes. I'm using a regular cable tv box (Bell, here in Canada). I'd like to buy a Google Home and have things displayed on my tv (schedule, weather, etc.) but that means pluging a Chromecast and switching HDMI input.

Is it possible, via an Android TV, to just watch my regular tv while still getting "overlays" off info coming from Google Home ?

Thanks !

Google Home only interacts with Android TV/Chromecast for casting video or music just by making a voice request. It won't show your calendar or forecast on your TV when you ask it a question.

There is an app called Notifications for Android TV that you install on both your phone and Android TV device and will replicate any notification from your phone on your TV screen. It's free and has some settings regarding which apps you want notifications from on your TV and even some aesthetic options.

It's not exactly what you are looking for but it's the only way of having "notifications" on Android TV that I know of.

You could do this with a cablecard and TV Tuner, like HDHomeRun Prime.

Only on nicer TVs, or TVs already running Android TV.

I can't think of anything or any combo of devices that does what you're looking for.

Android TV has zero notifications. It's for watching stuff on your TV, so they don't put any overlays or popups while you're watching video.

An HTPC setup that could come close. Use a PC as your DVR and then have Windows 10 "popup" stuff with some kind of specialized application.

I think once Google Assistant comes to Android TV's you would be able to do that, from what I recall of the Google I/O assistant provided info as an overlay, might want to wait for it and check again then
