Is there any way to remotely schedule a recording if I'm not physically in front of my TV to do it through Android TV?
I have HDHomerun Prime and I use NextPVR on my laptop as a DVR Server, and then I run Kodi and use the NextPVR PVR guide to watch live tv, and schedule recordings.
If I want to do it remotely, I browse to my Kodi server address and using the Core 2 interface, I can remotely schedule recordings.
It's not simple by any means but it works.
On a serious note- what are specific use cases for DVR nowadays, with Video On Demand available online from so many sources (including TV networks themselves). What do you need to schedule a recording of that you can't pay for either a la carte or as part of a streaming service? I see DVR as a legacy feature for old-timers. Educate me
SlingTV offers DVR as a separate service, and AndroidTV has an app for Sling
Is your DVR already through your Android TV? If you're using something like a HomeRun HD, you can use Plex to schedule the recordings. If your DVR is through a cable box, you wouldn't use Android TV to schedule it. But your cable company may offer an app to manage your DVR and recording schedule remotely.
