CenturyLink has unveiled its CenturyLink Player – an Android TV device, manufactured by LG https://www.androidheadlines.com/2017/07/android-tv-heres-a-new-android-tv-device-from-centurylink-lg.html

Using AndroidTV as a "cable box" platform is far from a terrible idea.

Wrong title OP, CenturyLink launched an Android TV set-top-box and LG is just the manufacturer. LG built also one for Indian TV provider Airtel and US Dish Network (Evolve for hotels).

LG just sold this unit to the French company Technicolor (making most of Android TV STB).

I have never once had a good DSL experience with Century Link. You could get up to 40MB/s for $20. You'll likely get 5... if you're lucky.

So if you're thinking this is a good idea, think again.

One wonders if LG would abandon WebOS for Android TV at some point in the future. Clearly they have already done the work to get a build running on their hardware. Does it make sense to develop and maintain two different TV OSes? And try to get developers to make apps for your one weird TV OS?

I hadn't heart of Century Stream at all until this article. That's really flying below the radar. All the tech sites cover YouTube tv and PlayStation Tv but not this?

It's hard to say that it launched an AndroidTV box, when it's only available to a very small number of people.
