Made the mistake of buying an "Android TV Box" from Amazon a year ago and the OS is shit now. Should I go with a Mi Box or is Shield really worth the price?

Thanks everyone for you input. I ended up pulling the trigger for the following reasons:

Ongoing support. This was the biggest reason for me, considering the fact that this Chinese box is falling apart and I can't install DirectTV Now and it runs pretty much every app like dookie. I read some threads about the Mi Box being awesome and I read a bunch about the device not getting updates for months and breaking. I know these are on a case-by-case basis, but I'd rather have a higher rated, more stable device.

Device Specs. 4k is cool and I probably won't use that or gaming that often, but the ability to handle GB speeds, better USB ports, and overall beefier specs. I know the Mi could likely handle Kodi/DirectTV Now and whatever else I throw at in well enough, but if i'm using a hardwired box for my whole central entertainment system, might as well make it powerful.

Amazon is awesome and accepted my year old $60 box as a return. I also recently got a similar $35 for my parents but I'm returning that too. I signed up for DirectTVNow (was planning on it) and they give you a free firestick, so I'm giving that to my mom instead of the new Chinese box ...essentially I am getting $95 back (inb4 /r/frugal says it's not free money, you already spent it) it doesn't seem so crazy to pull the trigger on the Shield for another $85.

Hopefully this Shield jawn owns up to the hype. Thanks boys.

A SHIELD is really worth the extra price, especially today (discounted on Amazon). It handles 4k without issue and has on-board Gig-E, neither of which the cheaper MiBox has to its credit. The SHIELD is also more powerful, though that really only matters when gaming or playing 4k content.

If you're only at 1080p and will be using WiFi, the MiBox is a much cheaper alternative...it has problems at 4k and doesn't have Ethernet, and isn't as powerful of a gaming box, but if these things don't matter to you, you can save a lot of money picking one up instead.

Yes.

Shield is also currently on sale . If you want something that can handle all that stuff its worth it, if you just want something to stream with, I'd say the Mi Box isn't bad. Just understand that price difference is justified.

Shield is worth the money if you can afford it

I would love to have a Shield, because awesome is awesome, but I still use the word overkill for my use case. I don't have 4K and don't play games. MiBox is a great 1080P streaming, Kodi, Plex device. The extra hundred dollars can be spent on buying more devices for the other TV's in the house.

It depends on what you use it for. For streaming only (Netflix, Hulu, Vue, Kodi, etc), the Mi Box is a better value. For Android games or streaming PC games than the Shield is a better value.

Other than speed and tech stuff I care about, the best thing about the new Shield has been that it is 100% wife and in-law approved. The ability to use the one remote programmed to turn on my receiver, the Shield and the TV with one button press has been awesome. No more writing out instructions every time I go away for a trip. They get that it's on and then you pick an app like a tablet to watch something (Vue, Netflix, Hulu, etc)

You do not need Gigabit Ethernet for even 4K video streaming.

You do not need USB3 for even 4K video streaming.

You need really good AC WiFi for 4K streaming. 1080p only Streaming you can get away with 5GHz N band WiFi.

You need Ethernet if you want ultra Reliable video streaming on any device.

A $10 official Xiaomi USB > Ethernet adapter solves those reliability problems on the Mi Box.

If you want Speed & Power and Amazon Video Streaming - buy a NVIDIA Shield, its that simple.

i have both, and really wish i had spent the extra money on the shield and have 2 of them.

not having ethernet, and the USB port on the MiBox being USB2.0 (aka limit of 10/100 for ethernet dongels) really piss me off
