Mi box is newer hardware. But, the NP is on nougat. The Mi Box is still on Marshmallow. Just make sure you aren't counting on any features that Android TV 7.0 brings.
Its showing 65 on Newegg. I'd say just get the mi box for 69 at walmart
I have both they are about the same in preformance past this point upgrades are a gamble the nexus player will get andriod o but google only supports devices for so long and the np is past its cut off
My Nexus stutters when playing 4k and i have no stuttering with the same movie on the Mibox
Mi Box is way better for me. NP has trouble with Plex playback and Sling stability in my use case. Mi Box does not. I wouldn't buy a NP these days.
This is such an annoying problem right now with Android TV. Neither are great for reasons listed in this thread already.
I haven't been following to closely, but Is there absolutely no chance for a Pixel Player this year?
Mibox at 4k30hz is fantastic. I think it struggles at 60hz, but haven't had the chance to try that.
Did you end up making a decision? I have a nexus player on my 4k tv but I'm debating on whether I should pick up the mi box for this TV, and move the nexus player to another room. Only $20 difference...
Nexus was great 3 years ago. Mibox is way faster, smoother and just plain better. The two are basically the same just the mibox is updated. I've upgraded all my Nexus units to mibox.
