Currently have a PleX server on a laptop and the media stored on an external HD. Any tips for migrating the data to an Nvidia Shield TV and setting this up right on a whole new network?

I'm moving and trying to do this whole thing right, starting fresh. I could use a bit of help migrating the library/server to a new machine. I want to make sure I store everything properly and don't run into storage issues on the Shield. I also want to make sure the ports are all forwarded properly for the best performance outside of my network since I share my server with a few people.

I'm not sure if it changes how I should configure everything, but I will be using the Shield TV to primarily run the usual video streaming apps in addition to setting it up with Kodi. Kodi can be a bit outside of my technical scope but I can configure Exodus and will likely just be using that ..but suggestions are welcome on how to optimize this setup.

Here's my current gear:

  • Seagate 4TB External HD with my current PleX library stored on it.
  • Shitty HP laptop I am retiring.
  • Gigbit hardwired Fios over a Quantum G1100 Modem/Router.
  • Brand new Nvidia Shield TV

Thanks!

Plug external hard drive into the Shield and set it up as a new server/library and forget your laptop server in Plex. then update your router port forward setting to the Shield IP address. That's what I would do, I wouldn't try to migrate libraries at all.

I recommend putting the external drive on your router as network storage if it has a USB3 port (if it supports your HDD's file system) instead of plugging it direct to the Shield. I've tried both methods and found the Shield too awkward for FTP in the event that I want to add new titles to my library. Then you can add the NAS as a network share in the Shield settings and configure Plex as usual. I've noticed no difference in performance, but I have a pretty nice router/network.

(Edit: decided "NAS storage" was redundant, like "ATM machine".)

I'd be careful with the amount of metadata that Plex creates when running the server, AFAIK the data occupies the internal storage of the shield which crippled mine and forced me to do a factory reset when it got too big.

IFAIK, you can't migrate a plex server to a shield. You have to start fresh.

Not sure if this still applies, but put all the your files in an NVIDIA_SHIELD subfolder. That's how the SHIELD gets write permissions.

Connect ext hdd to shield, install kodi, done.
