Looking for a great Android TV Device box but on a budget!

by jojelllybean

Hello everyone! I currently have a Minix X8-H Plus, but it looks like it won't be getting an Android 5.1 Lollipop update very soon and I think it's time for me to get a new TV box.

My budget is around $70 at the most. What would you recommend? I'd like a android tv device to last me at least 2 years or have updates through Android to be a little long-lasting.

Really interested in the Mi Box 3. Any problems with Wi-Fi or anything for the box? Where can i order one? Thanks for any advice!

The Minix device isn't Android TV. Be careful that you're not confusing "a box that runs android" with "Android TV".

I have 2 of the Mi Box - Model MDZ-16-AB which I assume you are referring to.

I have no problems watching 4k content from my NAS via AC wifi from either of them (one is 5m away line of sight from router, one 10m & 2 walls in between).

I don't know where you are so I assume you are in Melbourne Australia where we buy it here and use the cashrewards cashback.

I doubt anyone can guarantee it will get updates for 2 years but it seems well supported.

If you're looking for another option, Newegg somehow dug up a stock of Nexus Players . They're a bit dated, but should do fine at 1080p, and they're the only device capable of running Android TV O at the moment.

EDIT: Replaced link with cheaper deal

I use a Mi Box and never had any issues with it. FireTV box (uses Amazon's modified AndroidTV) is good too.

Of my devices, my preference is the Mi Box.

Carefull if you are use to some features plain android in your box has, you might find Androidtv more limited, it's basically a more closed platforms. It has some advantages like drm for TV apps like HBO and Netflix and casting, but it also supports less apps and fells more and more semi abandoned by Google

Don't buy off brand Chinese shit. They're seeping into more and more blog sites and especially YouTubers with referral links. If they have to bribe websites that's a reason not to trust them. One of my game news sites just sold out to them and even big noteworthy Android sites like AC just did too. Updates are not guaranteed and they have a service called "fotaprovider" which calls home to China

I use a rooted and unlocked fire TV and I'm using the recent "playing with fire" mod which brings most of the Android TV experience to fire TV

I also own 2 mi boxes. Both of them connected to an AC router. I have no problems streaming 4k HEVC videos from my desktop pc connected via gigabit ethernet. I also do game streaming via moonlight. Where are you located so that we can point you to the right direction on where to buy one.

Well there's two Android TV devices available right now, and one of them is $180+. Looks like a Mi Box is your only option.

Nexus player from Amazon/eBay is you don't care about 4k. MiBox is 4k is a priority.

People in this sub will recommend the miBox despite it's warts (lousy Chromecast, digital audio passthrough issues, no nougat yet). The Nexus player doesn't have any of these issues but it's not 4k
