Using USB 3.0 network adapters with Android TV

by HashWorks

Lately I got myself a Sony Bravia TV with Android TV 7.0. While I really enjoy the system the network connection is not suited for 4K playback. Streaming 4K files from SMB network shares with Kodi is quite laggy - it seems that the AC WiFi connections does ~4mb/s and the LAN connection limits at ~6mb/s.

I wondered if anyone got a USB 3.0 gigabit network adapter to work with Android TV? I have one from HooToo around, but it didn't work out of the box.

4K sharing using SMB is the problem. The protocol just isn't fast enough to do it. DLNA works better but it too has some limitations.

I used 2 different ones with my old Nexus Player and an otg cable. They're were just random no-name junk from Microcenter. The NP was only USB 2, so they were limited to around 400 Mbps, but still better than 100 Mbps from a non-gigabit adapter and much better than wifi.
