Is Android TV Used More Than Apple TV?

by andyworld

I was reading this article, and it seems Android TV usage is higher than Apple TV. Can this be correct?

Having both an ATV 4 and an Nvidia Shield, Android TV blows apple tv out of the water.

Android TV is used by quite a few TV vendors. So it's not surprising at all.

It seems accurate, the group conducting the survey seems to have enough info in the field to not mix up "Android boxes" with "Android TV" http://www.fluentco.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Fluent_StreamingServices_2017.pdf

Maybe the most desparaging thing in this study is that a majority of people said they would not pay more for a streaming service to avoid commercials (despite a similar majority saying ads are unacceptable). If I'm Netflix, or HBO, or any other premium service without ads, that information would inform me to introduce ads and slightly lowering my subscription price and yield a higher revenue.

I have both the shield and the atv4, despite my love for the apple tv's remote, the shield TV is definitely the overall better package.

Owned a 3rd gen Apple TV and a htpc. Was not impressed at all by the new Apple TV at reveal especially since my 3rd gen had been reduced to a podcast and airplay box only. Converted to a Sony TV specifically for Android TV and in fact it's my first time using anything Android. My 3rd gen Apple TV sits unplugged. The TV replaced my htpc and a fire tv stick has replaced the Apple TV that was plugged in the bedroom which will eventually be replaced with another Sony Android TV. Idk, what Apple needs to do but they have to do something more than efficiently designed hardware and a sleek user UI at a premium price to get my interest in the tv dept. works with their phones (that I own), it works with their computers (that I own also) which is also started to wear thin. I think for everyone else it comes down to price and no appeal cause they're not being apart of the ecosystem already. Thing I've learned as a apple user is they're only concerned with their already users and not anyone outside of it. A apple user is going to consider their TV before competitors and that's who they make the products for. Just looks at their Siri speaker. Only a Apple user/fanboy would buy it and to a large degree I believe Apple is fine with that cause they're high profit.

My Aunt and my Uncle both have Apple TV's. They gather dust, while the Chromecasts they also have, get used constantly. They have the Apple gear for status, and the other for real use.

I would have assumed Fire TV was more widely used. I know it's Android but not actual Android TV.

Well, you would think there would be more developer support for it. Apple TV has way more content apps. But I love my Shield though.

One thing I always hated about the ATV 2ndGen, was that once or twice a year it would stop booting, forcing me to restore, rejailbreak and reinstall xbmc/kodi. With the 4th Gen ATV, kodi is once again a difficult install, whereas on Android its easy.

The Android TV remote app hasn't been working for months. It was last updated in April. :(

As an owner of both, I prefer the Apple TV by a mile. The only app I even use that’s better on Android TV is YouTube, but that’s it. TvOS is so much more fluid than Android TV OS and I love the remote on my Apple TV 4. Only thing the Apple TV needs now is 4K HDR support which I guarantee is exactly what Tim Cook was hinting at, at the WWDC last month. I bet we’ll see a new 4K HDR Apple TV shown off alongside the iPhone 8 in September. Personally, I can’t wait!

It doesn't look that much higher. Actually more surprised at the popularity of Fire TV.

I have both and use the shield way more ...and I have 2 Apple TVs

Ironically, I only use my Apple TV for YouTube. Because the app works much, much better there.
